A Floyd Com ty man was killed and another was injured yesterday in an explosion at an underground coal mine, officials said.

Donald Brett Ousley, 21, of Hueys- vllle died at Highlands Regional Medical Center In Prestonsburg, said Glenn Frazier, deputy coroner in Floyd County. Jody Shepherd, 27, also of Hueys- ville, was treated for an eye Injury and was released. The accident happened about 11:30 a.m. at Kentucky Mountain Reserve Inc's Mine No. 1 at Gun- lock, about 15 miles south of Sal yersville, according to Joey Lucas, a spokesman for the state Department of Mines and Minerals.

Ousley was drilling a drainage hole in the mine floor and placing explosives inside when explosives already loaded into a nearby hole went off, Frazier said. Ousley was a "permit miner" he had taken training courses for mine work but had not completed the 90 days of work necessary to be come a certified miner, Lucas said He said Ousley was married and had one child. It was the first mine-related death in Kentucky this year. Breckinridge man, 87, dies in 2-car crash From Staff and Special Dispatches IRVINGTON, Ky. A Breckinridge County man died Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on KY 79 a mile north of Irvington.

Aloyslus E. King, 87, of Route 1, Webster, died at the scene, said Breckinridge County Sheriff Bobby Kennedy. Kennedy said King was traveling north in a pickup truck at 2:30 p.m. when he lost control on the slick road and crossed the center line. King's vehicle was struck by a southbound car driven by Granville Vincent 58, of Route 1, Leitchfield.

Both men were traveling alone. Kennedy said no charges have been filed. King was a director of First State Bank and the Meade County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, a farmer and a charter member of Holy Guardian Angel Catholic Church. His survivors include his wife, the former Nona Heavrin; two daughters, Joyce Carrico of Baldwin, and Lynn Seymour of Evansville, five sons, Jack and Howard King, both of Brandenburg, Maurice King of Louisville, Dorsey King of Denver and Kelly King of Crestwood; 40 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.

EST tomorrow at the church, with burial in St George Cemetery in Brandenburg. Visitation is at Alexander Funeral Home.
