Walter R. Wiedmar, 85, of Shively, died Sunday at Norton South- west Hospital. Walt went to his Heavenly home on Easter, March 31, 2002, surrounded by loved ones. He was a retired sheetmetal maintenance man for American Standard, where he worked for 36 years. He was an Army Veteran of World War and a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Chapel Hill United Church of Christ. Walt was an avid gardener, fisherman, pinochle player, dart ball player and bowler. He will be missed by many. GEORGETOWN Martha Louise Cates, 83, Georgetown, died at 6:25 p.m. Sunday at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, IN. She was a native of French Lick, IN and a member of Heartland Nazarene Church in New Albany. Survivors include a son, Ronald Cates of New Albany; and one grandson. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, Best, 93, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Providence Retirement Community. She was a graduate of The Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, IN, studying music. She received her nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing.

She later taught nursing at St. Joe and was a clinical instructor at the St. Joseph Cancer Clinic. She was a volunteer nurse and instructor for the Red Cross for 35 years. She taught home nursing, baby care and disaster nursing techniques to other RNs.

She was the first Louisvillian to be given the Estabrook Award in recognition of her ingenuity, initiative, teaching abilities and leadership in all phases of Red Cross nursing. She was also with the Visiting Nurses Association of Louisville. Evelyn is survived by a brother, Alois Best of Floyds Knobs; a niece, Mary Ann Duffy and a nephew, David Best, both of Floyds Knobs; 13 great -nieces and nephews; and 18 -nieces and nephews. Visitation at Generations Funeral Home, on Ballard Lane off Grantline New Albany, IN, will be from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m.

Jefferson County police are investigating a wreck that left an officer injured Sunday night, after he drove through a red light with his lights and sirens on. Patrolman Chris Keith, 24, was traveling west on Greenwood Road about 8:10 p.m. when he was hit by a Ford Explorer traveling north on Terry Road, said Officer Robert Biven, a police spokesman.

Keith was taken to University Hospital complaining of neck and back pain but was subsequently released, Biven said. "He is at home. resting," Biven The Courier-Journal said yesterday. "'He has minor injuries." No one else was injured in the wreck, which occurred as Keith was answering a call to help with a foot chase near Hackel and Crockett drives, Biven said. He said he did not know how fast the officer was driving.

Keith slowed as he approached the intersection, Biven said. But about halfway through, he was hit in the rear driver's side by the Ford Explorer, driven by Maria Stoffer, 25, of DePauw, Ind. No one was cited, but an investigation is continuing, Biven said. Jackson boy, 2, drowns in flooded creek Associated Press JACKSON, Ky. A 2-year-old boy fell into a rain-swollen creek Sunday and drowned, Kentucky State Police said.

Police received a call at 4:05 p.m. EST Sunday that Charles E. Tharp of Jackson, was missing. The caller said the child might have fallen into a creek in Breathitt County that was flooded from recent rains. About 20 minutes later, police and rescue teams located Charles about a half-mile from where police think he fell into the creek.

He was taken to the Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
