A resident of North Lake Shore Drive, he died Monday in a nursing home in Chicago. Established in 1947, the Chicagobased Great Books Foundation tries to provide people of all ages with the opportunity to read, discuss and learn from outstanding works of literature.

The Junior Great Books program works with children from the 2nd through the 9th grade. Often conducted in a school setting, it uses a "shared inquiry" method of discussion. Mr. Dennis, who was in the Army during World War II, attended the University of Chicago on the G.I. Bill.

Afterwards, T.F. Geary, a top aide to Byrne By Kenan Heise TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Thomas F. Geary, 61, chief of staff for Mayor Jane Byrne from 1980 to 1983, also had been city commissioner of the Department of Consumer Services, Weights and Measures and director of the Mayor's Office of Employment Services. A longtime resident of the Beverly neighborhood, he died at home Thursday. His manner was described in a 1981 Tribune editorial as "approachable and pleasant." He was hired in 1969 by Byrne, who at the time was commissioner of consumer services.

He eventually became her deputy and succeeded her in that position when she left it after a falling out with then-Mayor Michael Bilandic. After she had been mayor for some months, she appointed Mr. Geary chief of staff. In his position as director of employment services, he served as her patronage chief. He performed a key role in developing ChicagoFest and Taste of Chicago during her administration.
