KIT 183044: Family Lore:
(1) Related to AP Hills grand father (unproven)
(2) Robert Hill was said to be, by a great grandson, a son of
Thomas Hill b 1722, grandson of William Russell Hill & Frances Needles of Augusta Co/VA (unproven).
Robert Hill b 1765 died 1845 Wilson Co, TN (DOB from obituary written in 1845) Said to be long time resident of Davidson Co. Had property around Belle Meade in Nashville and associated w/ numerous Nashville notables such as the Robertson’s, etc. Robert’s parents are unknown but one family researcher (a great grandson) in 1900s alleged Robert Hill’s father is Thomas Hill b 1722 , son of William Russell Hill and Frances Mann Needles. Researcher was elderly at the time and states this was from family interviews and a book. This family researcher in 1900s also alleges Robert’s 1st wife to be Leah Harbison of Mercer Co KY.
There is a Rob’t Hill/Leah Harbison marriage but this cannot be confirmed as same Robert as above who ended up in Davidson and Wilson Counties in late 1830s. Recent research indicates a possible first wife of Robert Hill to be a Ms. Moore, late sister of David Moore of Nashville.
Timing and dates, however, of the Leah Harbison and Robert Hill marriage do not contradict the researchers assertion.
Robert and unknown first wife had one known son: Thomas Hill born approx 1791 died approx 1835, Nashville, TN.
Thomas Hill married Sarah Wood Thomas in 1813 in Davidson Co, TN .
Their children were: Robert Thomas Hill Sr. b approx 1815 , died 1863 Nashville, TN, who married Catherine Tannehill Stout; Emmeline Hill who married Mortimer Hamilton; and Susan Maria Hill who married a Mr. Saffarans.
Children of Robert Thomas Hill Sr. and Catherine Tannehill Stout above were Catherine b 1844; Thomas b 1846; Samuel H. b 1847; Jesse Thomas b 1850; Josiah (Joe) Wilkens, b 1852; Sarah (Sallie)b 1855; Robert Thomas b 1858 (aka Father of Texas Geology)and Margaret Jane (Maggie) b 1859.
Robert Hill and second wife Louisa J. Harrison married in 1834 in Nashville, TN.
They had the following children:
William Green Hill b 1835, died shortly after Civil War;
John M. Hill b 1836, died 1904, Wilson Co, TN married Susan Holman Allen;

Colonel William Higgins [Company?]
Designation: 2nd Regiment Tennessee Mounted Volunteers
Dates: December 1813 - February 1814
Men mostly from: Madison (Ala.), Lincoln, Robertson, Smith, and Wilson Counties [Tennessee?]
Captains: Samuel Allen, John B. Cheatham, John Crane (Craine), Adam Dale, William Doak, Thomas Eldridge, Stephen Griffith, James Hamilton (Hambleton), John Hill, Joseph Kirkpatrick
Brief History
Along with Colonel Perkins' regiment, this unit comprised the sixty-day volunteers enlisted by William Carroll to fill the rapidly dwindling ranks of Jackson's army decimated by the desertions of December 1813. Determined to make the most of this new army, Jackson marched these 850 green troops into Creek territory where they encountered the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco (22 and 24 January 1814). The Tennesseans at these battles suffered heavy casualties. The line of march went through Huntsville to Fort Strother and then to the battlefields.
Hill a brave and valiant officer who had settled in Sevier County near the French Broad River and was a good friend to Brig. Gen George Dourghty of Jefferson County was mortally wounded at this battle then later died from this demise [sic]. Serving in both Kings Mountain and the Battle of Boyd's Creek with Dourghty [sic -- should be Dougherty] and several others from the county [including] Maj. Hugh Henry. According to an application for compensation made by his wife Elizabeth Kyle Hill she had remarried by 1816 her "new" married name was not given in the report.

____As a mark of respect for the memory of ABRAHAM HILL, Revolutionary War veteran
On the following page is the obituary of ABRAHAM HILL, Revolutionary War veteran. His war service pension application, S7015, reveals that he was born January 29, 1758.

(Page 13)
ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY HERO GONE
Died at his residence in Iredell county North Carolina, on the 6th of September last, Mr. Abraham Hill.

Though the subject of this notice, from choice, spent his long life in none other than the character of a common citizen and soldier, yet there are some circ*mstances connected with his history, which may not be altogether uninteresting to his numerous relations scattered over the valley of the Mississippi, and which are perhaps better known to the writer than to any other person now living.

Mr. Hill was born in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, in the year 1757, and when very young, he accompanied his father to the neighborhood in which he spent the remainder of his days, when not in the service of his country. When under the age of sixteen he nobly took the place of his father in staying the ruthless Tomahawk and scalping knife of the savage. Soon after this when the patriotic and chivalrous sons of America took up arms against British oppression, he volunteered his services in the defense of his country's cause, and under the Brave Sumpter and Hampton of South Carolina was in a number of the battles of his own State, and that of his gallant commanders.

After the war was ended and peace restored to his country, he returned to the home of his father, and in a few years was united in marriage with the woman of his choice, with whom he lived until some three years since, when she was called to rest. They had a large family of sons and daughters, upon whose minds he constantly endeavored to impress the sentiments of morality and piety which were calculated to qualify them for usefulness to their fellow man, and happiness to themselves. He was spared to see the fruit of his labor, all of his children being respectable members of society, and some of them occupying eminent stations in the service of their country. Nor was his endeavor to diffuse these principles confined to his own family, as many now living can testify.

When young, he embraced religion, and united himself with the Presbyterian church, in which he lived more than sixty years, having acted as a ruling elder for the greatest portion of the time. In short, as a son he was obedient and dutiful, as a brother he was kind and fraternal, as a husband he was affectionate and kind, as a father he was rarely excelled in paternal care and watchfulness, as a master he was indulgent almost to a fault, as a soldier he was brave and fearless, as a citizen he was upright in all his intercourse with his fellow men, and as a Christian he was ardent in his piety, and exemplary in his conduct. When contemplating the character of him who is now no more, I am constrained to adopt the language of the Prophet and say "let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his." ---D. ____As a mark of respect for the memory ofJAMES HOGAN,

September 26, 1851
JAMES HOGAN, former editor of the WESTERN WEEKLY REVIEW died at Beech's Hotel [operated by John B. Beech and wife, Pamelia], three miles north of Franklin, Tenn., Sept. 25, 1851 of consumption.
JAMES HOGAN, September 2, 1810-September 25, 1851 [an effort was made to locate a tombstone for him in the old city cemetery, Franklin, but if there is one there still, it has become so deteriorated it could not be deciphered by the present compiler. Later local historians and genealogists owe this man a singular tribute for the information he has provided them in his newspaper.]
A tribute to his memory was published in the Oct. 3, 1851 issue of the REVIEW:
James Hogan, Jr.
After our paper had gone to press last week, and a portion of our issue worked of, we stopped the press to announce the death of our much loved friend, and late co-editor, JAMES HOGAN, Jr. We are sure that his decease, though long looked for, and daily expected, has penetrated many hearts with deep and sincere regret; for he had as many and devoted personal friends as any man that ever lived in Williamson county.
To us, who knew him so intimately and so long, his death is a sad bereavement; and we are pierced with sincere sorrow that death could lay his icy hand upon one who had many excellencies of character. His was a kindly and genial temper; his heart was a well spring of benevolent and charitable feelings, and he delighted above all earthly things, to render all with whom he came in contact happy.
Mr. Hogan was one of the founders of this paper, and for many years its editor, and those who have been its constant readers for a number of years remember the peculiar talent he possessed for pleasing all tastes, while he never violated the strictest rules of delicacy. As a racy and vigorous paragraph writer, he was undoubtedly superior to any man who has been connected with the Tennessee press for the last twenty years.
He was twice elected a member of the State Legislature from this county and represented the people with ability and honor, and could have continued to represent them head he so desired, but in consequence of difficulties which overtook him in 1839 he voluntarily retired from the canvass of that year, when he had no opposition. No man in this county ever enjoyed a higher degree of popular favor, and no one ever more richly deserved it.
For about ten years past, he has been deeply afflicted, never having enjoyed, in all that time a day of good health. For about nine years he suffered all the horrors of that dreadful disease — dyspepsia, and about a year ago, his disease settled upon his lungs and at last he died of that most fatal and terrible disease, pulmonary consumption. About eighteen months since his health became so feeble as to forbid his attempt to give any attention to business, and finding that death was inevitable, he sold his interest in this office, and retired to await the slow but certain approach of the grim monster Death; with calm philosophy and resignation to the will of God. He had his house in order, and his lamp trimmed and burning. — "He was a sincere and ardent Christian, adorning by a meek and quiet walk and a Godly conversation, and acts of Christian benevolence, the doctrine which he professed.
His reputation as a ready and graceful writer is co-extensive with the Union. In his manners he was a simple, sincere, and unpretending as a child, yet his mind was far above mediocrity. He was a diligent student and carefully improved every opportunity of informing his mind upon all subjects upon which he was called to act. He was an inflexibly honest man ?? between man and his fellow man, and truly honest in the things that pertain to the life beyond the grave.
He died in full possession of his mental faculties, at Beech's Hotel, three miles North of Franklin, at ten minutes past nine o'clock, on Thursday morning, September 25th, 1851, aged 41 years, 9 months and twenty three days.[JAMES HOGAN had sold his interest in the REVIEW early in 1850.]

____As a mark of respect for the memory of Gen. WILLIAM MARTIN
General WILLIAM MARTIN died Sept. 28, 1843 aged about 65 years
October 6, 1843
As a mark of respect for the memory of Gen. WILLIAM MARTIN, whose death is deeply regretted by all who knew him, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted at the last quarterly term of the county court of Williamson. — They will be read with interest by his numerous friends and acquaintances throughout the county, as embodying a brief but correct history of one who has rendered essential services to his country in a military, political, and civil capacity.

THE STATE OF TENNESSEE,
WILLIAMSON COUNTY COURT,
October Term, 1843.
The death of Gen. William Martin, county trustee of this county, being announced, the following testimony of respect for his memory and worth is ordered to be entered upon the minutes of this Court. General William Martin was born in the county of Stokes, in the State of North Carolina, in the year 1778, and emigrated to the State of Tennessee about the year 1812 or 13, and settled in the county of Williamson, where he resided up to the day of his death, which occurred on the 28th day of September 1843. He commenced his career of usefulness in the early stages of the Creek war, under Gen. Andrew Jackson. He was an efficient officer in the battle of Talladega, Tallahatchie and Horse Shoe. At the battle of New Orleans he commanded a company, many of whom are still living, who can testify to the skill and bravery he exhibited on that occasion. At Pensacola he acted as major, and performed signal service to the country, as well as a brave and fearless act in carrying the cannon into the very face of the enemy to play upon their ranks. On his return home his fellow citizens, gratified for the services he had rendered his country, elected him from the county of Williamson to the State Legislature, which place he filled on several successive occasions. As the strongest proof of their confidence and esteem, he never was refused their suffrages for any office he asked at their hands. In 1842 he was elected to the office of county Trustee, which office he held up to his death, the duties of which he performed as he had all others in the various relations of life, with honesty, fidelity and integrity.
Upon motion of Richard Alexander Esq., seconded by Jon Marshall Esq.,
Resolved, That in the death of Gen. William Martin, the county has sustained the loss of an efficient, faithful public officer, and the community at large one of its most worthy members.
Resolved, That as an evidence of our high respect and esteem for the memory and worth of Gen. William Martin, the members of this court will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.
Resolved, That a copy of these proceedings be signed by the Chairman and Clerk of the court, and forwarded to the relations of the deceased, and published in the Western Weekly Review.
