Authorities said he died of a heart attack in his hotel room. Severance took the Wildcats to their first NCAA tournament in 1939 and coached at the school for 25 years until he retired Severance after the 1960-61 season. Severance posted a 416-198 mark at Villanova, which he had attended. He made the varsity basketball team as a freshman in 1925.
He also ran the 880-yard dash on the track team and was a member of the boxing team. He was valedictorian of the graduating class of 1929 and went on to earn his law degree at Temple University in 1935. WALTHAM, Mass.
