Mrs. Chapman grew up in Andalusia, graduated from high school there and attended Harrod College in Birmingham, AL. Her first job was as librarian in Asheville, NC where Mr. Mrs. Chapman met and were married on Feb.

22, 1942. They moved to Jackson shortly thereafter. Mrs. Chapman employed by U.K. in the inventory of Mowbray Robinson Forest, as bookkeeper for Jackson Wholesale, as a teacher for Jackson City School and worked in their family owned business, Chapman's Department Store.

A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church since 1942, Mrs. Chapman served as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the choir, Sunday School teacher, and was a very active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Jackson Women's Club. Mrs. Chapman is survived by her loving husband, Victor L.

Chapman; one 97 year old aunt, Ida Lee Hunter, Andalusia, AL; and many other close friends and relatives. Visitation will begin at the Breathitt Funeral Home for the public at 5 p.m. today, Aug. 2nd. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.

Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Jackson with Revs. Susan Elkow, Arthur Ashcraft and Eugene Barber officiating. He was a native of Woodford Co. and son of the late William (Gladd) and Sally Perkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Mae, and two sons, James and Williams Perkins Jr. He was a top editor at Doubleday Co.and at Ladies Home Journal. She wrote several books for young readers, including Benjamin Franklin of Old Philadelphia.

LONDON Mervyn Cowie, 87, founder and first director of the Royal National Parks of Kenya, died July 19. Mr. Cowie, who was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and educated at Oxford, campaigned for wildlife preservation in the 1930s. He oversaw creation of the first Kenyan park at Tsavo, covering 8,000 square miles in 1948. ST.

REGIS MOHAWK RESERVATION, N.Y. Ron LaFrance, 51, a traditional leader for the Mohawks who was dedicated to the education of his people, died of a heart attack Monday. Mr. LaFrance, a chief on the Mohawk Nation Council, held a doctorate from Cornell University and was director of the university's American Indian program for several years.
