Hi Eric
I have the tutorial on the gearbox thanks. I have the gear box all disassembled and cleaned and getting ready for new bushings and paint. As a matter of fact I have the lathe broken dow into several major parts. This will be my winter task.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,

Saw the post you placed re: your lathe. I wrote a tutorial for the single
lever gear box which can be found in the SB Forum files. If you would like
I can send you the file from my computer...just send me an email.

If you want to take the gear assembly on the headstock end, including the
sliding gear for inspection and a good cleaning and repairs if needed, I
would not be hesitant to do so. I found the shaft on my sliding gear was
damaged and re-made one which operates perfectly. If you were to happen
to experience the same thing but not be equipped to make such items on your
own, members are here to assist you and there are members with a host of
parts lying around--just shout. The key is take your time, be patient and
ask questions as you progress and BEFORE you do something you aren't really
certain of. We have all faced the same problems as you will experience and
are all willing to help along the way. Heck, some of us will even take a
part off the machine at times to look closely at a question and provide a
hands on answer rather than guess.

I remember when I decided to take my own gear box apart that there were
those who warned against it unless absolutely necessary. Well I decided
that maybe my own efforts and experiences might help others faced with the
same concerns. That is why I wrote the tutorial with pictures and
descriptions, plus made the tools that facilitated the dis-assembly and
re-assembly smoothly. A number of members have used this as their guide and
Brad Jacob even used the tools I made and found them perfect for the task
intended.

To operate the best, the machine deserves the best we as owners can give
it--within reason that is. Dirt and previous abuse are the worst things to
over look and they certainly don't take care of themselves.

Eric

I know its a no no to grease gears (does the oil get there threw the oil cups)

Which gears:
In the saddle ... yes
back gear ... no
change gears ... no
QCGB ... yes

How about Molly Spray its dries fast and leaves a nice coat of dry molly lube the stays .

Will a chip stick to the dry molly?

Follow any of the lube charts as to what to oil and which oil. It has worked for near on a 100 years. I know lubes have come a long way but you are still working with turn of the century mechanical technology and that's the last century not this one.

Hello,
Been a long day I meant the Quick Change Gear Box I believe is the one if I'm correct about not greasing? or is it OK to use way Oil ? or spindle oil or another like Molly Spray.
Can any one tell me what is recommended as I have had a chip catch in the gearbox and I can't recall what I did ~30 year's ago as far as lubricating the unit.
