However, one record still remains intact. The 1960 Kentucky team still holds the distinction for the worst defeat of 37 points (101-64). "When you're in the huddle and coach says, 'Let's try to get it 1 under what can you said Cameron Stephens of Fort Wayne South. Kentucky, which lost to Indiana 102-88 last week at Market Square Arena, avenged being swept to record the seventh consecutive split in the series. Indiana was the last team to win both games in the same year in 1990.

Indiana outshot Kentucky 51.5 percent to 37 percent in last week's contest, but the two teams reversed roles Saturday night. Despite Indiana starting the contest 3 of 11 from the floor, it trailed Kentucky only 14-11 after the first five minutes. Kentucky made 6 of its first 8 shots. From there, Kentucky poured it on with a 43-12 run over the next 13 minutes to build a 57-23 advantage. Indiana Mr.

Basketball Luke Recker, who scored 38 points last week, was held scoreless in the first half despite playing 18 minutes. He missed all five field goals. Stephens of Fort Wayne South, who chipped in 20 points last week, missed his first nine field goals before finishing with 11 first-half points. Kentucky shot 62.5 percent in the first half (25 of 40), while Indiana finished 11 of 36 for 30.6 percent. "This will prepare us for next year," Recker said.

"When you play on the road, you will not get all of the calls. But you can't blame 40-something points on the officials." Trailing 59-30 at halftime, Indiana closed the gap to 63- 40 in the first three minutes of the second half. That was as close as Indiana got. Although Recker got on the scoreboard in the second half with nine points, Kentucky kept adding to its lead, eventually going on top 103-62 in the final three minutes. got to a point where we could play it one of two ways," Indiana coach Marty Johnson said.

"We could play it to try and keep their score down or we could attempt to win. We made an effort to try and get back in the best way we could." For the game, Kentucky shot 57 percent (45 of 79) from the field, while Indiana finished at 34.5 percent (29 of 84). Stephens led Indiana with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Chad LaCross of East Noble added 13 points and six rebounds. Anthony Grundy paced Kentucky with 22 points, while Ashley Olinger contributed 18 points.

"They have been to almost all of my games, but at least I knew he was all right and had talked with him," Runyan said. "I would have liked to see them here because they won't make it to all of my Evansville games. This was a lot different than the Junior All-Star game when I didn't know his condition real well." Even though Runyan would have preferred his dad to be in attendance for his final high school game, it was a comfort to know he was still watching one of Kyle's biggest athletic achievements from afar.

Runyan left Madison-Grant as the school's singlegame (45), single-season (604) and career (1,579) scoring leader. And the two-time Chronicle- Tribune Grant County Player of the Year helped his school win a sectional title along the way. Yet, nothing ranks as high for Runyan as being selected to the Indiana All-Star team. "This will always be a great honor," said Runyan, who earned second team Associated Press All-State honors by averaging 25.2 points and 7.9 rebounds last season. "The first time I saw Indiana on my jersey, they was some major body tingling putting that jersey on that you see everyone else wear, "I'm getting to play for my school, Grant County and the state.

It only happens to 13 players. It doesn't happen to all the other high school seniors. They don't get this chance to be picked. Having this chance is one of the best honors that an Indiana high school player can have. It's something that I will remember the rest of my life." Matt Solinsky is the sports editor of the Chronicle-Tribune.

The smallest school in the Final Four, the Wildcats won their second straight baseball championship Saturday night, beating perennial big-school power Carmel 10-8. "It's great. It's the last time for the one-class tournament," said Jasper's Matt Mauck, who received the Indiana Iligh School Athletic Association mental attitude award.

"A lot of runs scored. Our defense probably wasn't the best, but there were a lot of nerves out there," Mauck said. Scott Kluesner and Klint Helchelbech drove in two runs apiece to lead Jasper's offense. It was the final tournament of the 1996-97 school year, and starting in the fall, all team sports will be split into separate classes based on enrollment. Jasper also became the first school in the 31 year history of the tournament to win back championships.
