There he met his wife, the late Mary Houghton, and the two went to China, where Mr. Freeman became a professor of engineering and philosophy at Tsing Hua College in Beijing.

He taught at Tsing Hua until 1923 and then became an executive with American Life Insurance working for the firm until World War II forced him to return to the United States in 1941. While in China, Mr. Freeman traveled widely and studied the cultures, languages and politics of China. His immersion in Chinese culture was so thorough, and his knowledge, of the importance of local loyalties to the Chinese so keen, that Wesleyan professor Vera Schwarcz said "he was Confucian to the core." His reputation as a scholar on China was equaled by his dedication to such causes as Chinese famine relief. He also was a trustee of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, and active in other charitable organizations.

Mr. Freeman wrote extensively on China, and in 1972 he published his translation of "Preservation of Learning," by the 17th century philosopher Yen Yuan. In an interview in 1987, Mr. Freeman noted that "the United States faces east and west, but our orientation has always been toward Europe. This country has frequently blundered in its relations with Far Eastern peoples, not from intent, but from a lack of understanding." He called for "more knowledgeable people in our embassies and our businesses and our cultural organizations." Beginning in the early 1970s, Mr.

Freeman made gifts to Wesleyan to permit the development of its East Asian Studies program. In 1986 he and his son, Houghton, gave the school $5 million toward the construction of the Freeman Athletic Center. Mr. Freeman leaves his son, Houghton of New York; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
