Beatrice Dana (Swanger) Baker

Beatrice Dana Baker, age 92, of Shelby, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Hospice House in Ashland.

She was born September 5, 1920 in Richland County, Ohio the daughter of the late William K. and Grace E. (Gutshall) Swanger. Bea attended Tiro schools and was a 29 year employee of Shelby Business Forms. She enjoyed counted cross stitching and beading jewelry.

Bea is survived by her 4 children: William (Patsy) Baker of Bowling Green, OH; Judy (Ed) Binion of Shelby; Tina (Nick) Yosick of Mound City, KS; Mary Lou (Charles) Lively of Wapakoneta, OH; 11 Grandchildren; 22 Great grandchildren; 5 siblings: Kenneth Swanger, Glenn (Bonnie) Swanger, William Swanger, Jr., Donald Swanger, Elsie (Lester) Shepherd all of Shelby. She was preceded in death by her husband: Raymond G. Baker in 2002; a brother: Frank Swanger; 3 sisters: Gladys Ewing, Helen Lybarger and Mildred Pugh.

Friends may call on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 PM conducted by Pastor David Davenport of Faith Baptist Church in Ontario. Donald Eugene Browning, Sr.

Donald Eugene Browning, Sr., age 70, of Mansfield, died Saturday, December 08, 2012 at home.

He was born May 11, 1942 in Charleston, West Virginia the son of the late Lucille (Goodwin) and Rufus Browning. Donald worked in construction most of his life and lived in California for many years. While there, he and his late wife, Jeannine, began a therapeutic riding program, Lady B Ranch, of which he was very proud. They provided this service for over 20 years.

Donald is survived by his first wife: Fran Mackey and their 2 sons: Donald E. Browning, Jr. of Shelby and James Bo (Regina) Browning of Shelby; 2 step children: John (Jennifer) Smith and Lori (Chris) Hitt; 7 grandchildren: Nichole (Nicholas) Webster, Donald E. Browning III, Danielle Browning, Larissa Browning, Kyle Stidam, Kobi McKenzie, Kaleb Browning; 6 great grandchildren: Taylor, Hailey, Ethan, Leo, Wyatt, Malayla; 3 step grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; 1 sister: Bonnie J. (Wayne) Liegey of FL; 2 brothers: Denver (Christine) Browning of Crestline and Jimmie D. (Karen) Browning of Mansfield, with whom he made his home. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Jeannine Smitty Browning.

Gladys L. Cronin

Gladys Louise Cronin, age 84, of Shelby, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at her home.

Gladys was born January 17, 1929 in Loudonville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Rufus Jay and Mabel (Pealer) Atherton. She was a graduate of Loudonville High School and worked for Flexible Bus Company in Loudonville. She later retired from Uforma/Shelby Business Forms in Shelby. Gladys enjoyed baking and doing word-search puzzles. She truly cherished visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gladys is survived by 3 daughters: Deb (Tom) Shank of Plymouth, Pam (Dan) Hockley of Shelby, Mary Sheppard of Shelby; 5 grandchildren: Jeremy (Melissa) Shank, Dave (Emilie) Shank, Adam Hockley, Kip (Debbie) Sheppard, Kara Sheppard; 5 great grandchildren: Gabriella Shank, Hailey Sheppard, Caleb Shank, Avett Shank, Kamden Sheppard; one sister: Patricia (Bruce) Larcomb of Westerville; 2 special friends: Esther Oberholtzer, Flossie Burkholder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Alfred E. Cronin on February 13, 2010; 3 siblings: Rufus Jay Atherton, Jr., Lelia Berry, Thelma Rinehart.

Calling hours will not be observed. Private family services will be held with burial following in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Memorial expressions can be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio. Care for the Cronin family is being provided by the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby.

Elsie E. Reinweiler

Elsie E. Reinweiler, age 100, of Shelby, died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Crestwood Care Center.

Elsie was born December 27, 1911 in Milan, Ohio to the late John and Frances (Meyer) Reinweiler. She was retired from Ohio Steel Tube Company where she had spent 20 years in the payroll department. Elsie was the oldest member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Daughters of Isabella. She was an avid card player and enjoyed the Cleveland Indians but her true love was her family.

Elsie is survived by a sister: Beatrice Johnson of Shelby; nieces and nephews: Michael and Lynne Johnson of North Canton, Linda and Jim McBride of Shelby, Laurie and Dick Parrish of Shelby, Marjorie Fada of Florida, Jane and Steve Scheid of Milan; numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law: Eleanor and Robert Schwable; a brother, Rev. George Reinweiler; a brother-in-law, Ralph Johnson.

Friends may call on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 6-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where a rosary service will be conducted at 8 pm by the Daughters of Isabella. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11 am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelbywith Fr. John Missler and Fr. Nick Cunningham concelebrating. Donald Elzy Clark, Sr.

Donald Elzy Clark, Sr., age 87, of Mansfield, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.
Don was born July 30, 1924 in Freeport, Harrison County, Ohio to the late John Elzy and Marjorie Elizabeth (Steffey) Clark and was a graduate of Freeport High School. On August 25, 1946 he married Ruth Mary Smith and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2011. Don was an army veteran serving at the end of WWII in Korea as a medical tech. Mr. Clark spent his entire life in the agricultural business as a farmer, feed store operator, milkman, manager at Swartz Potato Farm, salesman for Tennessee Corporation, was a partner at Richland Chemical in Shelby, and was the owner of Rural Farm Distributors, Knox County Citizen, and Dempster Industries in Nebraska.
Don was a member of Clay Memorial Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of FFA and The Grange, was a member of Shelby Sertoma, and was a former board member of Crestwood Care Center in Shelby and Good Shepherd Home in Ashland. Don and his wife, Ruth, were part of the People to People Organization and traveled extensively around the world with them.
Mr. Clark is survived by his children: Marjorie (Steven) Guthrie, of Mansfield, Linda Clark (Roger Guertner), of Scottsdale, AZ, Donald Elzy II Butch (Toni) Clark, of Bellville, Sara Ruth Clark, of Mansfield; son-in-law and spouse: John Timothy (Marlene) Krisko, of Ashland; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter: Donna Krisko in 1978; 3 siblings: Dean Clark, John Jack Clark, Helen Schultz.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 6-8 pm at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby and also on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 10-11 am at Clay Memorial Lutheran Church where funeral services will be held at 11 am. Pastor Carol Kilgore will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the church.

Elmer Hall

Elmer Hall, 65, died Sunday, July 22, 2012 in Shelby, Ohio.

Elmer Papaw Hall was taken home to be with the Lord after an extensive illness. He was born in Floyd County, KY but had spent most of his life in Ohio with his family. He owned Hall’s Paving and Seal Coating with his sons until his health no longer allowed him to continue. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with family and grandchildren. Elmer was a remarkable man who devoted himself to each of his grandchildren. His dream was for his children and grandchildren to continue their journey by prospering in long life full of love and joy.

He leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Carolyn Hall; his sons, Mark Hall; Jon (Michele) Hall and daughter, Penny Hall; five grandchildren, Candiss Hall, Caleb Hall, Cody Evans, Izabella Hall and Cheyanne Hall and his brothers and sisters residing in MI and KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carmel and Leslie Hall; son, Teddy Sexton and several brothers and sisters.

Elmer touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and always maintained his trademark sense of humor. Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on, Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, conducted by Rev. Roy Kilgore, with a graveside service following at Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven.

He was a husband, father and grandfather; ‘Papaw’, will be deeply missed.

Gertrude (Stevens) Seaman

Gertrude W. Seaman, 99, of Shelby, died Monday, September 17, 2012, at Crestwood Care Center in Shelby.

Born June 2, 1913, in Shelby, she was the daughter of Roy T. and Sarah (Wareham) Stevens. Mrs. Seaman graduated from Shelby High School in 1931. In 1934 she married Elmer W. Seaman, who predeceased her in 1987 after 52 years of marriage.

She is survived by one son and three daughters: Arthur W. Seaman and his wife, Myrna, of Shelby; Eltrude (Trudy) Bodkin (widow of Joseph Bodkin) of State College, PA; Sara Laser and her husband, Thomas, of Fairfield, PA; and Pamela Davis and her husband, Gregory, of Dublin, OH. She also had 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Seaman was a member of First Lutheran Church in Shelby for over 70 years. She was active in the Women’s Missionary Society and served for a number of years as the Sunday School Treasurer.

In the 1960’s she worked as a school cafeteria cook at Whitney Elementary School in Shelby. In the 1970’s she and her husband raised Vizslas (bird-hunting dogs). They generously donated one puppy from each litter to the Pilot Dog Foundation in Columbus.

Her other interests included cooking, baking, and preparing large family meals. She was a proficient knitter and made many items for her family, as well as newborn baby caps which she donated to Med Central Health System for many years. Until she was 90 years old, she drove her own car and mowed her own 3-acre property with a John Deere riding mower.

Funeral service will be held at Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, Ohio, on Saturday, September 22, at 10 AM conducted by Rev. Russ Yoak, pastor of First Lutheran Church. Graveside services will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, from 6-8 PM.

Iona B. (Johnston) Gates

Iona B. Gates died at her home on Thursday, December 13, 2012. It was her 91st birthday.

She was born December 13, 1921 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to the late John and Inez (Erzinger) Johnston and graduated in 1939 from Shelby High School. Iona worked at Ben Franklin in Shelby for many years. Prior to her time there Iona raised her five children. A selfless person, she helped her children through college by sewing, making draperies and upholstering furniture out of her home. Iona was a very active member of First United Church of Christ where she was an elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher, along with many other duties. She was the Meals on Wheels coordinator, HelpLine volunteer and was the recipient of the Jess Rath Community Service Award. She also served as a poll worker for many elections, Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, 4-H advisor and was on the Shade Tree Commission for 25 years. Her hobbies included quilting as she used her time and talents to create baby quilts for the ABC Quilt Project.

Iona, the last of nine children, is survived by a daughter: Patricia (Robert) Saltzgaber of Ashland; 3 sons: David (Arlene) Gates of Sydney, OH; Garland John (Patti Welch) Gates of Shelby; Charles Herrera of Palm Springs, CA; 4 grandchildren: Michael (Kris) Gates, Lisa Gates, Patti Saltzgaber, and Tiffany (Charles) Hill; 6 great grandchildren; a brother-in-law: Paul Foote of Seneca Falls, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband: Garland J. Gates in 1988 and by 2 sons: Bruce Reed Gates in 1995 and Carl Jeffrey Gates in 2010.

Friends may call on Monday, December 17, 2012 from 1-2 PM at the First United Church of Christ, 23 Church Street, Shelby where funeral services will be at 2 PM conducted by Pastor Bob Flint. Burial will be in Sandusky Township Cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio or to the church. Care was given to the Gates family by Turner Funeral Home, Shelby.

Ruth E. Whisler

Ruth Eileen (Feaster) Whisler, age 77, of Shelby, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center after an extended illness.

Ruth was born on February 6, 1936 in Shelby to the late Charles and Emma (Boyce) Feaster and was a 1954 graduate of Union High School. Ruth drove bus for 27 years for Crestview Schools and after retirement she spent over 10 years at Miracle Ear in Ontario. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where she was involved with the Alter and Rosary Society and the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed bowling and camping, but most of all, Ruth was especially proud of her family.

On March 20, 1954, Ruth married Francis Whisler and he survives. Also surviving are 4 children: Diana (Gary) Kerr of Grove City, Russ (Kathy) Whisler of Ashland, Lori (Dale) Dye of Marion, Timothy (Lisa) Whisler of Mansfield; 7 grandsons: Kevin (Stephanie) Kerr, Andy (Ashley) Kerr, Ryan, Daniel, Joseph, Jacob, and Austin Whisler; 3 great grandchildren: Caleb, Hailey, and Sara Kerr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lavern Feaster.

Friends are welcome on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby from 2-4 and 6-8 PM where a rosary will be recited at 7:45 PM by the Daughters of Isabella. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday at 10 AM with Fr. John Missler and Fr. Nick Cunningham concelebrating at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Crestview Scholarship Fund, Ashland Cross Country Parents Organization, or The James Cancer Center.

Dorothy M. (Auck) Deruy

If you looked up the definition of lady in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Dorothy M. Deruy, according to her husband, Bob. Dorothy Auck met the love of her life, Robert H. Deruy, while she was working at Wilkens Air Force Depot in Shelby. They were married on November 21, 1953 and enjoyed 58 years together as residents of Shelby, until her death on Sunday February 19, 2012 at the Hospice House Inpatient Unit in Ashland. She had only been sick one month.

Born January 9, 1935 in Chatfield, Ohio the daughter of the late Omar and Lorretta (Durnwald) Auck, Dorothy was a 1952 graduate of Chatfield High School. Dorothy worked at Sears in the Richland Mall, from which she retired. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and vacationing in Myrtle Beach. She and Bob spent 18 years wintering there and had many friends that became their second family. Dorothy’s passion, however, was her family and she loved them dearly. She treasured time spent with them especially attending all her grandchildren’s activities. Her family feels that to know Dorothy was to love her.

Along with her husband, Bob, Dorothy is survived by 2 sons: Robert C. (Viki) Deruy of Shelby and Michael E. (Paula) Deruy of Powell; 5 grandchildren: Cari (John) Gauld of Brewer, ME, Keli Deruy of Perrysburg, Courtney Deruy, Mitchell Deruy and Alexis Deruy all of Powell; a brother: Donald (Mary) Auck of New Washington; 2 sisters: Marilyn Patrick of Newark and Marcella Tuokola of Bucyrus. She was preceded in death by a brother: Edward Auck and twins sisters: Sandra Burns and Linda Rhoden.
