A Negro woman, Thelma Marshall of 925 Curtis is charged with attempted murder in connection with the case. Police said she admitted that she pushed Archer down about an hour before she called police and complained that he was trying to get into her house. Witnesses at the Curtis Street address were quoted as saying Archer had been there earlier Sunday night and had purchased whisky in the Marshall woman's presence, police said. Investigating officers said they found a small spot of on a flower box on the Marshall woman's porch where Archer apparently struck his head after being pushed. After reviewing the reports of officers connected with the case, Chief Calhoun made this statement of circ*mstances surrounding the incident: At the time Archer was arrested, his only apparent injury was a small cut on the head.

He declined an offer of medical care while he was being booked, saying he was not badly hurt. Appeared All Right During the night and early morning, he was checked seven or eight times by jailers making routine rounds Each time, he appeared to be all right. When officers roused him for breakfast, he said he did not want anything to eat. He was again asked if he wanted a doctor. He again said he was badly hurt.

When officers began rounding up prisoners for court, he was given a bath to get him ready for feel like going to court. Officers, trial. 1 Later, he said he did not thinking he was not yet sober, asked that his trial be postponed. Nothing Unusual (This action was not unusual in such cases, Chief Calhoun explained.) For the next several hours, he was checked at least every 30 minutes and each time, appeared to be all right. But when he was asked if he wanted lunch, he first accepted but later changed his mind, saying he did not feel like getting up.

Officers then became concerned. A doctor was called but said he would not be free to examine Archer until later in the day. It then that police officials ordered ed that he be taken to a hospital, although Archer still insisted that he did not need medical care. Archer's record shows a long line of arrests on drunk charges. The Marshall woman's bond was set at $5,000.
