The Labyrinth was an ingenious maze commissioned by King Minos and designed by the architect Daedalus. In order to escape the maze after killing the Minotaur, Theseus needed a ball of thread, given to him by the princess Ariadne.

On Crete, Theseus seduced Minos' daughter, Ariadne, who conspired to help him kill the Minotaur and escape by giving him a ball of yarn to unroll as he moved throughout the labyrinth (90.12a,b). Theseus managed to flee Crete with Ariadne, but then abandoned her on the island of Naxos during the voyage back to Athens.

So, Theseus and Ariadne took a tearful farewell of each other and the ship set sail to Athens. Unfortunately, everyone in the ship was distraught at parting from Ariadne and forgot to change the ship's sails to white.

Ariadne betrayed her father and her country for her lover Theseus. She eloped with Theseus after he killed the Minotaur, yet according to Homer in the Odyssey "he had no joy of her, for ere that, Artemis slew her in seagirt Dia because of the witness of Dionysus".
