We all know that Dutch breakfasts are not exactly a fancy affair. Usually, it’s a slice of toast with hagelslag and that keeps you going until lunch. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more substantial to stuff your face with, there are plenty of incredible breakfast spots in Amsterdam.

1. Mortimer Amsterdam

📍Nieuwezijds Kolk 33, 1012 PV

Mortimer Amsterdam is super popular at breakfast time for a reason. It’s widely known as one of Amsterdam’s best breakfast spots and this narrow restaurant has a little romantic charm to it – perfect for a breakfast date.

Check out the delicious pastries for a light bite or something on the go. They’re fantastic paired with a lovely cup of coffee. The coffee at Mortimer is roasted by Dutch the company, Sprout and tastes so smooth.

If you want something more filling then you can enjoy a range of breakfast dishes, including a full English breakfast (vegetarian version available). There’s also eggs benedict and ‘Dutch eggs carbonara’, which consists of delicious Dutch eggs atop a toasted muffin, cheese foam and speck.

Mortimer is only open until 3 pm, every day, and you might have to queue for a little while until a table becomes available. However, it’s definitely worth the wait.

2. Gartine

📍Taksteeg 7, 1012 PB

Gartine really is something special in the centre of Amsterdam. The ingredients that go into making the tasty breakfasts there comes from their kitchen garden and are organically grown.

By 10 am this place is usually packed so make sure you reserve a table to avoid disappointment. Then, sit back and enjoy the friendly service and food as fresh as it gets.

You can indulge in French toast served with maple syrup, dates and roasted nuts if you have a sweet tooth or opt for an equally tempting savoury breakfast. The eggs benedict with boiled eggs fresh from Gartine’s own chickens is calling out to us! Breakfast is served between 9.30 am and 12 noon every day except Monday and Tuesday.

3. Staring At Jacob

📍Jacob Van Lennepkade 215, 1054 ZP

Staring At Jacob is a little slice of New York in Amsterdam. Technically, it’s a brunch spot but you can enjoy the brunch menu from 9 am and really, a Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich first thing in the morning sounds perfect, especially if you’re looking for a Sunday hangover cure.

Vegetarians can expect the same spicy goodness, with fried cauliflower wings paired with buttermilk waffles and scrambled eggs. The majority of the breakfast/brunch menu is vegetarian or vegan so those who don’t eat meat have a whole lot to choose from!

If you’re after a boozy breakfast (after all, boozy brunches exist) then you can order a spicy Bloody Mary or a mimosa to go with your delicious breakfast, too. It is advisable to book a table in advance and there’s loads of outside seating too for breakfast with a view on a sunny day.

4. Greenwoods Singel

📍Singel 103, 1012 VG

Looking for a great gluten free breakfast? It’s not always easy to find, even in a big city like Amsterdam. However, at Greenwoods Singel you can order plenty of their breakfast dishes with gluten free toast and enjoy the same delicious meal as your friends.

On the menu are loads of refreshing teas, a couple of mocktails and plenty of tempting plates of food. Amsterdammers love a full English breakfast and here you can enjoy one with or without meat. You can also enjoy a tasty pancake stack, which can be made vegan and classics like eggs royale and eggs benedict.

It’s only a small place so you can expect to wait for a table at busy times but when the food arrives it’s like a work of art. To reserve a table, it’s best to call the restaurant directly using the details on the website.

5. Bakers & Roasters

📍Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 54, 1072 BH

📍Kadijksplein 16, 1018 AC

If you’re looking for some hearty grub then head to Bakers & Roasters. With two locations in Amsterdam, they don’t accept reservations but it’s worth the wait for a table.

The two owners are from New Zealand and Brazil. With inspiration coming from three continents, the food here mixes tons of different cuisines. You can tuck in to some tasty huevos rancheros with organic Brazilian black beans.

Fancy a fry up? Check out the Kiwi brekkie with eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, and much more. There’s also a veggie breakfast with salty halloumi (mmm) and kimchi fried rice with sticky tofu, which is vegan.

If you have a sweet tooth, you can also enjoy a stack of fluffy American pancakes at breakfast or a refreshing fruit bowl. They also make their own selection of cakes and here they are also committed to making sustainable, eco-friendly food.

6. Ted’s

📍Bosboom Toussaintstraat 60, 1054 AV

Ted’s serves brunch and breakfast food all day, from the ever popular eggs florentine to tasty breakfast burritos and even spicy chicken katsu. There are also stacked sandwiches on offer which will probably leave you feeling full until the evening.

If you’re searching for something sweet then you need to try the Oreo banana pancakes with Nutella and banana slices. They’re a chocolate-lover’s dream. It’s always worth booking a table at Ted’s and with two locations in Amsterdam in convenient locations, it’s perfect for those days when you have to drag yourself out of bed.

7. Dignita Hoftuin

📍Koninginneweg 218h, 1075 EL

There are three Dignita locations in Amsterdam but if you want a super relaxing breakfast then head to the Hoftuin location where there are huge windows overlooking a gorgeous, lush garden. There’s also tons of outside seating and this hidden cafe offers some of the best breakfasts in Amsterdam, for sure.

This bright, airy spot really comes alive in the summer and you can tuck into a tasty all day breakfast until 5 pm. Choose from delicious dishes like eggs benedict with bacon, avocado or salmon or try a tempting savoury kadaif dish.

There are also delicious chocolate pancakes and, of course, eggs on toast with rich, runny yolks. You don’t always need to book a table at Dignita Hoftuin and if you do have to wait then you have time to appreciate the gorgeous garden.

8. Moods Coffee Corner

📍Lindengracht 249, 1015 KH

📍Cornelis Schuytstraat 57, 1071 JG

There are a couple of Moods Coffee Corners in Amsterdam and both serve fantastic breakfasts. The one on Lindengracht is situated on a cute little corner overlooking the canal and if you can secure one of the tables outside, you definitely should as to enjoy that stunning view.

The other location is within a Sport City gym and that’s the flagship so if you want to work out before your breakfast then this place is perfect. You can obviously expect delicious coffee from both locations, alongside tea and fresh juice.

Breakfast is a yummy affair. This avocado on toast, sumptuous, flakey crossants, granola bowls topped with fresh fruit and salmon on toast with runny eggs and avocado. Eating here will fill you up, with generous portion sizes and loads of fresh, quality ingredients.
